Several Brown County fire departments responded to a house fire on County Road 234 Thursday night which sent two people to the hospital and damaged one room of the mobile home.

Approximately 8:40pm, one of the homeowners smelled smoke and found a bedroom of the home to be on fire.  The man quickly shut the door and called 911 for help.  According to Fire Marshal Buddy Preston, the homeowner’s quick thinking to shut the door helped to save the family’s home.

Fire crews arrived to find the one room of the home in flames; however the fire was contained in the bedroom area and kept from spreading to the rest of the home according to Preston.

“The man smelled smoke in the bedroom and closed the door, which really saved the rest of the home,” said Preston.  “The sheet rock in the room held and did its job.  The fire did not get into the attic.”

The fire was electrical in nature according to Preston, caused by an overloaded extension cord in a duplex outlet of the home.

The owner of the home was taken by ambulance to Brownwood Regional Medical Center for treatment of chest pain and his grandson, who had suffered smoke inhalation, was also transported to BRMC, Preston reported.

The home was not a total loss; however the one bedroom was completely destroyed and there is some smoke damage throughout the home.  Preston stated that the Red Cross was called in to help the family of five.  A relative who lives nearby is housing some of the family temporarily, so they currently have a place to stay, reported Preston.

Bangs Volunteer Fire Department, Early Fire Volunteer Fire Department and Brownwood Fire Department responded to the fire.
