FikesSheilaShelia Woodson Fikes, age 71 of Lake Brownwood, was born February 5, 1941 in Claremore, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents O.M. and Lois Woodson also of Claremore, Oklahoma.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James W. Fikes, three children Kimberly and husband Ken Kelso, Midland, Texas; Stephanie Lynne and husband Ron Smith, Del Rio, Texas; and James O. Fikes and wife Noelle of Pearland, Texas.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren Kade, Kelsi, Kara, Daniel, Tyler, James Caldwell and Hailee Noelle; five great grandchildren Ethan, Gunner, Skylar, Karson, and Leila Grayce; one brother Dr. L.M. Woodson of Claremore, Oklahoma and one sister Barbara Oxford of Collinsville, Oklahoma and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Monday September 17, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Rocky Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Rick Justice officiating assisted by Dr. L.M. Woodson. Burial will follow at Rocky Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Davis-Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood.

She was a teacher who loved teaching and especially the reading classes. She loved every student she taught and was an avid reader. She loved animals, and was especially fond of cats. Any cat that came on the home place wound up being adopted.

She was an accomplished painter and did many oils that she shared with friends. She would not accept commissions because it would become work and would no longer be fun. She particularly enjoyed surprising a friend with an unexpected gift.

She had a deep and abiding love for her church and Sunday School Class, the Samaritan Class. Often she would comment what a great loving, helping, and caring class that it was. As part of her extended church activities she was a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Ministries in Brownwood. It was a very rewarding experience that she got great pleasure from. It was an extension or a way of helping those in need. Her pet expression was “The Lord wants me there and that is where I am going to be.”

She taught in four schools: Liberal, Kansas; Cross Roads, Texas; Brownwood, Texas and Sweeny, Texas. She enjoyed her co-workers at each school, but felt especially close to the Woodland Heights Faculty. After retiring the occasional get together with old friends was very enjoyable.

The family requests that donations be made to Good Samaritan Ministries in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be left for the family at www.davismorrisfuneralhome.com.
