What was called by many  a “toss up game” turned out to be a disappointment for the Brownwood Lions as they lost their first home football game of the season to the Graham Steers 28-7.

The Lions had 4 turnovers, which resulted in 3 touchdowns for the Steers and the Lions were only able to make one scoring drive during the game.  Mistakes again played a big part in the Lions’ loss.

Brownwood Head Coach Bob Shipley said that he was disappointed in the loss, but still saw some bright spots.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Shipley.  “I’m disappointed but not discouraged.”

Shipley explained that the team is learning a new offense and that hopefully by district play, it will all come together.

“We’ve got to work it out and get rolling by district.  The fact of the matter is that we’re not getting it done offensively,” Shipley said.

Injuries again plagued the Lions as three players suffered injuries during the game.  Two of them came back into the game; however, Colton Guidry remained out of the game and will be out for the season according to Shipley.

Graham has a strong team and will likely go far in the season Shipley said.  He explained that although the Lions have lost two games, they have been against two really good teams and that fans need to continue to show support.  He stated that he sees a good team in the Lions, but that it hasn’t been “pulled out” yet.

“These kids are giving it their all,” said Shipley.  “We’re going to continue to work and pull it out of them.”

After the game, Coach Shipley talked with the team, telling players that they have to believe in themselves.

“How are you going to get everyone else to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourselves,” said Shipley as he encouraged the team to not let the loss get them down and to learn assignments and work on eliminating mistakes.

The Lions go 0-2 on the season as they are set to travel to Snyder next Friday.
