MADISONMARCUSWADEAlleged gunman Marcus Madison, 42, is accused of shooting and killing Reagan County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Mitchell in what became a 17-hour standoff with law enforcement in Big Lake, Texas last week.

Madison who has been identified as a Lake Brownwood resident has a history of making threats against law enforcement officials, according to Brown County Sheriff’s reports.

Madison was arrested by Brown County deputies on July 7th after the report of a domestic disturbance, according to the BCSO report released on July 9th.  The report states that Madison was arrested for assault with injury –family violence after deputies determined that he assaulted a female victim.  Deputies said in the report that Madison “refused to place his hands behind his back and deputies had to take him down where he continued to fight.”

After being secured in the back seat of a deputy’s patrol unit, the deputy says in the report “Madison made numerous threats about assaulting me once he got out of jail and if he ever saw me again.”  The report states that Madison also made numerous attempts to kick the windows out of the patrol unit.

“Madison has a history of assaults on police officers and aggravated assaults on police officers,” the report states.    It also states that based on his history of assaulting officers, his treats were taken seriously.   At that time, Madison was additionally charged with resisting arrest and retaliation or obstruction.

Brown County law enforcement officials would not comment on any encounters with the suspect.

Madison has been charged with attempted capital murder after the incident last week in Big Lake.  Officials have said they expect Madison’s charge to be upgraded.  Madison was taken to a hospital after the standoff with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.  Authorities have said that his injury is not life threatening.

Funeral services for Reagan County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Mitchell will be held on Wednesday, August 8th at 10am with a special law enforcement tribute at Reagan County Park.   Brown County Sheriff’s office said that they are planning to send some local deputies to attend the service.
