Wayne Nelson was born on May 9, 1928 in Redwine, Texas, a son of Lucian Keller “Heavy” Nelson and Jewel Odessa Smith Nelson.   He was raised and educated in Redwine and New Home, Texas.  After graduating at New Home in 1945, he attended Texas Tech University one and a half years before entering the Marines in 1947.  He served in the United States Marines for three years.  Following his discharge he attended Texas Tech and then became employed by National Supply in Odessa, Texas.  He met and married Daphyne Gober in Eldorado, Texas on January 18, 1953.  They made their home in Midland, Texas and Hobbs, New Mexico with their two daughters.
