BPDpatchSmallBrownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of May along with year-to-date numbers for 2011 and 2012.

Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a more transparent department to the public.  Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.

The total number of crimes decreased by 19 incidents in May as compared to the previous month, which demonstrates a decrease of approximately 13%.   Of these crimes, about 36.5% were cleared for the month of May 2012.

Year-to-date statistics for 2012 show that 26.7% of reported crimes were cleared as compared to 21.1% of the  number of crimes during the same period of 2011.  The 2012 total number of reported crimes is up for the year by 42% as compared to 2011.  The majority of these crimes are larceny theft which was up by 60% and assault which increased by 34% as compared to year-to-date numbers for May of 2011.

According to reports released in May, DWI arrests decreased 33.3% as compared to April.  The year-to-date report however shows that 2012 has had 25 more DWI arrests than in the same time period of 2011.  The number of motor vehicle accidents was up by 5% in May 2012 as compared to the number in April.   There has been a decrease of 5.7% in the number of motor vehicle accidents in 2012 year-to-date compared to the same time period the prior year.

See below for the April and May 2012 statistics along with tables of year-to-date 2012 and 2011 statistics of the same time period for comparison.  The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police.  The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
