The 2012 Brown County Relay for Life kicked off Friday evening at Gordon Wood Stadium with hundreds of participants working in teams to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  About 45 teams set up tents and booths to help collect money while also walking the track all night.

Months of fundraising activities by participating teams came together at the Relay for Life event.

The Brown County event kicked off Friday night with the arrival of honorary co-chairs, cancer survivors Dr. David Morales, Dr. Eric Wiley, and Abby Hubbard in a pair of helicopters.

The honorary chairs then led the cancer survivor lap and balloon release followed by a lap for caregivers around the stadium track.  A new lap was added to the opening ceremony this year for all teams to walk one lap to get things started. After dark, luminaries were lit and the lights turned out as the names of loved ones lost to cancer were read along with survivors.

Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society where individuals and teams walk/run overnight to show their commitment in the fight against cancer and to help raise money for cancer research and support.

Top photo shows honorary co-chairs set to lead the survivor lap.
