BMSPointofLight2012Brownwood Middle School students, teachers, and staff, including BISD Superintendent Dr. Reece Blincoe and BISD Deputy Superintendent Kevin Gabree gathered in the BMS gymnasium to honor Diana Mullins at the Joan Stewart Point of Light assembly on Wednesday, May 9th.

Mullins, an 8th grade math teacher at Brownwood Middle School is retiring after 33 years in the profession.

“Diana began teaching at the Texas Youth Commission where she stayed for three years before moving to Brownwood ISD,” announced 8th grade English teacher Brenda Howard during her remarks at the assembly.  “She has taught here for 29 years.  I must say that in knowing Diana Mullins we have been blessed. Whether a student, co-worker, supervisor, family, or friend she has enriched our lives beyond measure.”

Commemorating the dedication, perseverance, and quality of teaching displayed in the life of Stewart, recipients of the honor are recognized during the ceremony for their accomplishments in education and their ability to be a “light” to those around them.

“The assembly honors teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week and spotlights one particular teacher that was nominated by peer teachers,” said Allison Northcutt, a 7th grade reading teacher at Brownwood Middle School. “Joan Stewart was a teacher in this district years ago and has passed on, but her family members still come to the assembly.”

Members of Joan Stewart’s family presented the award to Mullins, and her name will be added to the Point of Light Spotlight plaque on display at Brownwood Middle School.
