Two people were transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center on Sunday afternoon after being swarmed by bees and stung multiple times according to Brownwood Police and Fire Department officials.

The bees apparently were disturbed when a man attempted to mow near a small storage building in the 2700 block of Cleburne Avenue in Brownwood. According to Brownwood Fire Department reports, the bees came from a hive that was built inside the storage building.

When fire crews arrived, they found a Brownwood Police officer who was swatting bees off his face, unable to help a man who was stung multiple times and downed by the bees, the report states. Three firemen suited up in full gear to rescue the man and pulled him to the fire department’s Rescue 1 vehicle where he was loaded into the back and taken to a nearby ambulance at the corner of Peach and Cleburne Streets.

According to the report, fire crews then received a report of a second victim, inside a mobile home, who also had multiple stings, was found to be shirtless and was having troubles breathing. A second ambulance was called to transport this second victim to the emergency room.

Fire crews then searched for the hive and found a small storage building full of old bee hive boxes. In an effort to remove the bees without killing them, a bee keeper was notified who stated he could be at the location within an hour; however, he later decided not to come, the report states. Fire crews then flooded the hive with foam and tore the wall apart to get to the entire hive, according to BFD officials.

The condition of the two victims was unknown at the time of the report.
