Party conventions across the state began selecting delegates in the last two weeks, but with a few changes in procedure over past years due to the delay of primaries in Texas.

The Brown County Republican Convention was held on Saturday and unlike years past, the county convention is being held before the primary election, and the state convention is being held about a week after the May 29 primary.

“This year because we have been plagued by the courts on this redistricting, the primary is so late that they really had to change the rules,” said Brown County Republican Chair Brad Locker. “When you vote in the Republican primary, you get your voter registration card stamped Republican and normally that is the credential we would use.  You couldn’t come to this convention if your card was stamped Democrat and vice versa.  This year because there has been no primary, those cards are not stamped.”

Locker said that those participating in the county convention this year were required to sign an oath at the door that they intend to vote in the party primary on May 29th.

Delegates and alternate delegates were nominated at the Brown County Republican convention on Saturday who will attend the Republican Party of Texas State Convention in Fort Worth.

“Our main purpose here is to collect information from the populous and precincts and to nominate and elect a delegation to go to Fort Worth,” Locker said.

The state convention will be held June 7-9.
