On Friday, January 13th, East Elementary second graders put their science lessons to the test by hosting their first ever science fair.

“It was amazing.” said Nanda Wilbourn, Principal at East Elementary. “We had volcanoes, airplanes, wind turbines, stain removers, mold, illusions, temperature, and environmental hazards, such as oil spills and electrical currents.”

“My hypothesis was totally wrong,” said Carlee Coffman, 2nd grader in Kathryn Makuta’s class. Carlee was measuring the size of the spill when water balloons were dropped from various heights. She thought for sure that the water spills would be larger when dropped from a higher elevation, but her results showed that it wasn’t true.

There was plenty of science to view during the science fair ranging from Cade Jetton’s analysis of the effects of water and vinegar on bones to a display by Lillie Deeds that examined the damage of an oil spill on the environment. Another project from Seth Oines and Aden Solis studied how the number of folds on a paper airplane affected the distance it would fly.

“Out of our 83 students, 73 of them participated displaying a variety of projects,” Wilbourn said. “We were delighted to have many family members and friends come and view all the amazing projects and congratulate our scientific 2nd graders.”
