Brownwood Police along with a Brown County Sheriff’s investigator arrested an 18-year-old male after he shot twice at his mother’s boyfriend as the man was trying to leave a residence, according to Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy.  Police said that the suspect ran from the scene and was arrested after he jumped a fence in his effort to flee and was attacked by a pit bulldog.

According to Brownwood Police, Manuel Edward Mantos stood in the gate of an apartment complex located in the area of the 700 block of Coggin Avenue and Vine Street.  The shots were fired toward Coggin Avenue around 3:00pm, reports state.  Police were able to locate damage to the Brookshire’s grocery store where the bullet ricocheted off of the brick of the backside of the building and denting the gutter downspout.  The weapons used by Mantos in the assault were identified as a .45 automatic and a.38 revolver pistol, according to reports.

The suspect’s vehicle was located in the 1000 block of Vine Street near the apartment complex and appeared to have fresh damage where it had struck either a tree or telephone pole, according to police. 

According to Sheriff Bobby Grubbs, the BCSO investigator helped Brownwood Police search for Mantos and was able to locate him after looking in the nearby residential area.  Mantos had apparently “jumped the wrong fence” according to Grubbs and was apprehended after being attacked by a pit bull, one of three dogs in the fenced yard where he was found by officers.

Mantos was taken to Brownwood Regional Medical Center where he was treated for the dog bites he sustained.  Mantos was charged with Evading Arrest or Detention and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.  As of Tuesday morning, the suspect was being held at the Brown County Jail on $75,000 bonds.

“This is a good example of our two agencies’ cooperation,” said Grubbs.  “We’ve got a good working relationship with the Brownwood Police Department.”
