Dr. David L. Lowrie, Jr., senior pastor at First Baptist Church in El Paso, was elected chairman. Lowrie, an HPU trustee since 2007, is past president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. While on the board, he has served as first vice chairman, member of the Student Life/Christian Environment Committee, member of the Executive Committee and past chairman of the Denominational Relations Task Force.

Robert Carter, a financial services consultant from Fort Worth, is the board’s new first vice chairman. Carter is a 1973 HPU graduate and was honored as the Distinguished Alumnus in 2007. He began board service in 2009 and has served as second vice chairman, as a member of the Financial/Support Services Committee and on the Executive Committee. He is a member of Riverbend Baptist Church in Austin.

Carter Sharpe, owner of Smith and Sharpe Insurance Agency of Brownwood, was elected second vice chairman. Since joining the board in 2010, Sharpe has served as a member of the Academic/Faculty Services Committee and is currently serving on the Financial/Support Services Committee and the Executive Committee. He is a member of Brownwood’s Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.

Kay Nettleship, a retired educator from San Saba, was elected secretary. She began service on the board in 2007 and has served on the Advancement Committee and Executive Committee. She is a 1965 HPU graduate and a member of First Baptist Church in San Saba.

Two Brownwood businessmen were elected to Howard Payne University’s Board of Trustees during the annual meeting of the Baptist General Convention of Texas in October.

Dwayne Grooms, a 1962 HPU graduate and owner of Grooms Seed, and David Robnett, Allstate insurance executive, were elected to three-year terms beginning January 1, 2012.

Grooms, a member of First Baptist Church of Brownwood, will serve on the Marketing and Communications Committee. Robnett, a member of Brownwood’s Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, will serve on the Advancement Committee.

“Howard Payne University looks forward to the year ahead,” said Dr. Bill Ellis, university president. “We are blessed to be led by such outstanding individuals.”
