BMSDecoratesChatfldTreeSeventh and Eighth grade art students at Brownwood Middle School unleashed their creativity and artistic abilities to create ornaments and decorate a Christmas tree at Chatfield Assisted Living the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

“The students made the ornaments themselves,” said Julie Mize, art teacher at Brownwood Middle School.  Mize added that she did provide materials and examples that the students could follow.

Pat Koslucher, Chatfield’s activities director, contacted Mize about decorating a tree to add to the facilities Christmas décor.  The students spent two days working on the project and enjoyed putting their skills to work in the community.

“They loved it.” Mize said. “The activity gave them a chance to break from the usual routine in the class, and the pieces they made were able to have an immediate and functional purpose.

Through the process of creating the ornaments and decorating the tree the students were able to see how their artistic skill could be utilized in the community.

“I think they like having the opportunity to do something to benefit someone else,” said Mize.  “The students also enjoy getting to see their work have real world applications, and the majority of students seemed to appreciate that their decorations will be enjoyed by other people in the community.”
