October 23-31 was designated “Red Ribbon Week” in Brownwood by Mayor Stephen Haynes during Tuesday’s Brownwood City Council meeting.

Mayor Haynes stated that the week is an important activity to promote drug awareness and prevention. Haynes stated that Texas State Technical College contacted him requesting a proclamation regarding Red Ribbon Week to promote drug and alcohol awareness and education.

“We often talk about law enforcement when we talk about drug rehabilitation and drug prevention, those community efforts are very, very important,” said Mayor Haynes.  “We have no hope in eliminating that problem unless we work together for the community’s sake.”

Joe Wilkins is pictured with Mayor Haynes as he presented the proclamation regarding Red Ribbon Week.

National Family Partnership heads up the Red Ribbon Week campaign for citizens, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to a drug free lifestyle.  Business, government and parents, law enforcement, media, medical, religious groups, schools, and others are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to a healthy drug free lifestyle by wearing red ribbons during this week-long campaign.

This proclamation coincides with the city’s efforts to help citizens dispose of unused prescription drugs.  The drug take back event will be held on October 29th from 10:00am until 2:00pm.  The two drop off locations are at Wal-Mart, 401 W. Commerce, and at the BISD Administration Building, 2707 Southside Drive.
