The Brownwood Reunion Celebration kicked off Friday night with one of its most anticipated competitions of the weekend, Hands on a House.

This year, 11 contestants are trying to outlast each other to be the last one standing to take home the custom built playhouse constructed by the Brownwood High School building trades department.   The house was built to commemorate an old area landmark, Lindey’s Drive-in.

Each year the Hands on a House competition also involves a canned food drive and it’s already well underway.  This year, the food drive benefits Good Samaritan Ministries and the St. John’s Episcopal Church Food Bank.

Brownwood schools took part in the competition by participating in the food drive.   East Elementary held a school wide contest to help the cause.  The winning class at East was Ms. MatloFridayHouse2ck’s with 205 items and the school’s grand total was 1362 items.  Woodland Heights and Coggin Elementary Schools also held food drives on their campuses for the event.  TexasBank also held a food drive in advance of the event.

Spectators are encouraged to contribute canned goods on behalf of the contestants to help them earn extra breaks on the house.

Several other side competitions will be held during the event to help either eliminate contestants or reward them with extra breaks.  The contest is expected to last until Sunday with the participants standing with at least one hand in contact with the house and with very limited breaks.

Hands on a House is sponsored by Coldwell Banker, TexasBank Mortgage and Brownwood High School.
