A pair of grass fires ignited Wednesday afternoon near the corner of County Road 134 & 135 northwest of Brownwood.

According to Chief Dennis Lilley of the Bangs Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters responded quickly to the fires keeping them contained and protecting nearby homes.

“One fire was 5 acres and the other one was 15 acres,” Lilley said. “We have them 100% contained.”

Lilley said that the fire came within feet of a propane tank near one of the homes, but no structures were damaged as firefighters concentrated on protecting the homes when they first arrived.

“We had 16 trucks respond to the fires from several different agencies,” Lilley said.

Lilley said that the cause of the fires is currently under investigation.

The Bangs Volunteer Fire Department, Brownwood Fire Department, Lake Bridge Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Dam Volunteer Fire Department, and Early Volunteer Fire Department helped to fight the fires with assistance from Guardian EMS, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, and Emergency Management Coordinator Brent Bush.

Area fire departments also responded to about a 10 acre grass fire on FM 586 and FM 1176 near Brookesmith earlier.  Several fire units left the Brookesmith fire once it was under control to fight the other fires in the county.  No structures were damaged during the Brookesmith fire.
