JulyupdateA malnourished horse from Brown County has improved over the last several weeks in the care of Ranch Hand Rescue in Argyle according to ranch president Bob Williams.

“I am happy to tell you that Honey Boy has been upgraded to serious condition and has gained almost 175 Pounds in just 5 weeks,” Williams said in an email.  “Today, Honey Boy has his dignity back; he is loved and respected.”

Honey Boy was taken to the rescue ranch back in June after he was found to be about 700 pounds underweight along with numerous other medical issues.

With the help of the Brown County Sheriff’s office; Corinne T. Smith Animal Shelter; and Larry Neaves, owner of a horse hospice facility in Brookesmith,  Honey Boy was taken to Ranch Hand Rescue for rehabilitation after it was determined that the owners could not take care of him.

After caring for the 34-year-old horse over the last several weeks, Williams said that he believes that the horse’s problems are due to more than just its age.

“Friends, this is what we do here at Ranch Hand Rescue, as you can see by his improvement, there is no doubt whatsoever that this is a clear case of abuse and neglect,” Williams said.  “Any vet that would claim his weight loss is due to his age is simply wrong. This horse has been starved and it’s that simple.”

Williams said that Honey Boy is recovering slower than expected due to the heat, but has a positive outlook for his recovery.

“He is amazingly sweet and has an incredible will to live,” Williams said.  “We are cautiously optimistic that he will make a full recovery.”
