Brownwood Police hosted a blood drive through United Blood Services of San Angelo on Tuesday, June 28th.

According to Fern Snow, a Brownwood Police Department (BPD) employee and coordinator for the event, by 11:00pm, all but three appointments had been filled by donors.

Bloodmobile donor techs, Terrie Hawkins, Jeni Dunn and Stacy Trevino were busy helping donors give the gift of life, a pint of blood.  According to United Blood Services, every two seconds someone needs blood. This year alone, more than five million patients will require blood transfusions as they recover from accidents, surgery or receive treatment for leukemia, cancer and other diseases.

Pictured above BPD officer Chandra Means  prepares to give blood for the first time.  Other city employees that were present as donors at that time were Animal Control Officer Nick Ferguson, Fire Marshal Buddy Preston and Police Department records clerk Pat Wilson.

Remember, donors receive FREE cholesterol testing every time they donate.  You must be at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with parental consent form), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health to donate.

United Blood Services has been this area’s non-profit community blood provider since 1956, and serves patients in 10 hospitals in 11 counties.  The United Blood Services network is one of the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit blood service organizations, and is a founding member of America’s Blood Centers and the American Association of Blood Banks.
