Howard_Payne_logosmallBand students from high schools across Texas will pay tribute to fallen firefighter Greg Simmons and other volunteer firefighters during a special concert to be held Friday, June 24, at 11:15 a.m. in Howard Payne University’s Mims Auditorium. Simmons’ daughter, Karley, will be among the musicians premiering a special selection in his memory.

Karley, a student at Eastland High School, is one of almost 300 students from 70 schools across the state visiting HPU this week for the Band Leadership Camp, led by Corey Ash, HPU’s director of bands. The week will culminate in Friday’s event featuring the Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

A volunteer with the Eastland County Fire Department, Greg Simmons was killed April 15 while battling wildfires that raged throughout Eastland County. Other survivors include his wife, Carrie, and daughter Kateland.

“He was a volunteer dedicated to keeping our communities safe from fire,” said Dr. Robert Tucker, dean of music, fine arts and extended education at HPU. Tucker has given Karley French horn lessons for two years.

The Wind Ensemble will premiere the selection “The Spirit Descending,” composed by Jordan Robert Tucker, Dr. Tucker’s son. The piece is based on the hymn “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart.”

“We are honored to host this 38th annual Band Leadership Camp and to have the opportunity to perform this original composition in memory of Greg Simmons,” Dr. Tucker said. “It is especially gratifying seeing young men and women in this band contributing their talents to this cause.”

The event is free, and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

For more information, contact Dr. Robert Tucker at (325) 649-8600 or via e-mail at rtucker@hputx.edu.
