Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes proclaimed the week of May 15-21, 2011 as National Pulbic Works Week in Brownwood, recognizing the contributions that public works officials make every day to the community’s health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.

Haynes recalled a recent mayor’s convention where he had the opportunity to speak with the mayor of St. Louis who told him that public works was usually a headache for most mayors.

“That’s not the case traditionally here.  There are no problems and no complaints,” stated Haynes.  “They do a great job.”

Public works services, according to the proclamation:

• Are an integral part of our citizen’s everyday lives
• Rely on the support of an understanding and informed public which is vital to the efficient operation of public works systems and programs
• Are greatly depended upon by the citizens for their health, safety and comfort of the community
• Quality and effectiveness of facilities, as well as their planning, design and construction is vitally dependent upon the effort and skills of public works officials
• The efficiency of qualified and dedicated personnel who staff its departments are materially influenced by the people’s attitude and understanding the importance of the work they perform.

Haynes read the proclamation and thanked the public works staff present stating during Tuesday’s proclamation event, “Thank you for all you do.”

The proclamation states that citizens and civic organizations are encouraged to “acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing our public works and to recognize the contributions which public works officials make every day to our health, safety, comfort and quality of life.”
