The City of Brownwood participated in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 30th with a big response from the public. This program provided a venue for individuals who wanted to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs in a safe manner.

Brownwood Assistant Police Chief James Fuller reports that approximately 68 pounds of pharmaceutical drugs were retrieved from citizens between 10am-2pm Saturday during the event.  Fuller said that the drugs consisted of over-the-counter medications, prescriptions, vitamins, and even veterinary drugs.  Drop off points were located near Wal-Mart and at the Brownwood ISD Central Office.

Police officials said that the goal of the take-back program was to help keep illegal drugs off the streets in the area and to keep them out of the city’s wastewater treatment system as well.

“This is very exciting for the City of Brownwood as we made a positive turn toward ridding our city’s water supply of harmful chemicals,” said Fuller.

All the drugs collected were transported to Abilene where they were turned over to the DEA for disposal.

The City of Brownwood plans on conducting this program again on a semiannual basis.
