GuillianCarleeKKC“Kids Kicking Cancer” of Woodland Heights Elementary started their fundraising efforts by having a mini Relay for Life on Thursday, April 21st at the school.  Their efforts raised over $1100 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life which will be contributed to help in cancer research, awareness and prevention.

The Kids Kicking Cancer team will be honoring Gillian Sapp and Carlee Richardson this year, two children attending Woodland Heights that have each battled cancer.

At the event, Woodland Heights participants sold shirts featuring caricatures of Sapp and Richardson.  There were also other items for sale such as kids KKC bracelets, and KKC dog tag necklaces and luminary sacks sold which honored cancer survivors and victims.  They will continue to sell these items, have other fundraisers, and accept donations until the end of the school year to raise money for their team.

Team leader and cancer survivor Brandy Bishop was thrilled over the success of the event and the opportunity it gave to educate the kids about cancer.

“We got the opportunity to educate these kids’ lives for better health and to allow them to support their friends with charity and love,” stated Bishop.  “It was truly touching to hear some of the kids concern for the names on the sacks.  One kid even asked me if she (the person on the sack) lived or died.”

The community is asked to support this team, as well as the others, by purchasing these items that are for sale.  All the money will be donated to the American Cancer Society through this year’s Relay for Life event that will be held the first weekend in June at Gordon Wood Stadium.  For more information or to order items, please call or text Brandy Bishop at 642-2757.  CLICK HERE for a rundown of other upcoming Relay for Life fundraising events.
