The 37th annual  KOXE/KBWD cherry pie auction was held Saturday morning at the Adams Street Community Center.  All the money raised during the auction is divided equally between the Brownwood youth sports organizations including freshman league baseball, teenage baseball, girls’ softball, Cen-tex soccer, and soccer for fun.

The City of Brownwood parks and recreation director David Withers reports that for the 2nd year in row, a new record was set during the event.  This year, $15,298 was raised edging out last year’s record of $15,284.

The event got its start in 1974 as the product of a brainstorming session between station owner, the late Bill Jamar and then-sports director Dallas Huston.

The original event featured pies only, but it has grown through the years to include a number of items.  In addition to pies of all types including of course, cherry pies, gift certificates from local businesses and various sports memorabilia were up for auction again this year.  As always, the auction was conducted live on KOXE and KBWD.

This year’s top items, those bringing in the most money, was a corner whirlpool bathtub donated by Kohler and an autographed football containing the signatures of Jordan and Jaxon Shipley and Colt and Case McCoy.  Each of those items brought it $1400.

Over $350,000 has been raised over the past 37 years.
