Rugby

Members of the Brownwood Lions football team participated in a Quad Rugby exhibition game on Sunday at Brownwood High School’s Warren Gym.

The event was organized by Brownwood High School’s Josh Hernandez and Coleman native Amy Simmons who have each been paralyzed due to separate car accidents.  Amy belongs to the Quad Rugby team the North Texas Cowboys through the program called RISE Adventures.  The exhibition game was held to raise money for the Cowboys program.

The Cowboys dominated the Brownwood team (calling themselves the Squirrels) in the first game, but the teams mixed things up later with Brownwood players and Cowboys dividing up into more evenly matched teams.  A fun game to watch and much more physical than many would expect.

Quad Rugby is a wheelchair sport with complex strategies for playing both offense and defense.  It is played with volleyball on a basketball-size court with goal lines marked by cones and a lined-off “key” area.

The object of the game is to score a goal (1 point) by crossing the goal line with possession of the ball while the opposing team is defending that goal. The team with the most points when time runs out wins.

RISE Adventures’ goal is to create independence for the entire physically challenged population. They accomplish this goal through sports, recreation, and outdoor events and programs.
