Keep Brownwood Beautiful (KBB) and Northwest Elementary have teamed up to bring a recycling program to the school.  Every Tuesday, KBB will bring a mobile recycling trailer to the campus for students, staff and their families to drop-off their recyclables.

“We are so excited to be working with Northwest Elementary,” said KBB Director, Cary Perrin, at a school assembly on Friday, December 3rd.   “We want to see how it works here, and then perhaps we can do this with all the schools,” said Perrin.

The recycling initiative began when third grade teacher, Mrs. Kerzee, invited KBB to make a presentation to her class about recycling.  Afterwards, Christine Young, school counselor, began working on a school-wide recycling effort.

The program kicked off on December 3rd, with an educational program about recycling by Ms. Perrin.  She talked to the students about what types of goods they can bring to the trailer, how to sort them, and what condition they should be in when they bring them to the trailer.

Tuesday, December 7th, was the first day the trailer came to Northwest.  “It looks like it is going to be a success,” said principal, Stacy Smith.  “As soon as the trailer got here, we had students and teachers lining up to drop in their items.”

The recycling trailer will be parked in the Northwest parking lot every Tuesday from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm.  Students and school staff are encouraged to bring their clean, sorted recyclable items on Tuesdays.  Mrs. Smith said parents are welcome to drop-off items into the trailer while it is located on school grounds.
