VeteransDayParade

Students at several campuses across Brownwood Independent School District recognized Veterans’ Day with special events.  Below are descriptions of activities that were held.

Brownwood Middle School

Middle School math teacher, Diana Mullins, hosted three Sykpe sessions for students to visit with soldiers in Iraq.  Skype is a web-based phone call which shows live video of the person you are speaking with.  Mrs. Mullins projected the video of the soldiers on a screen, so that all the students could see them.

During 2nd and 3rd periods, students Skyped with Mrs. Mullin’s son-in-law, Sgt. Michael Fulkersin, and two of his buddies, Spc. Edwards and Spc. Morales.  They are in the Army and stationed in Iraq.  It was Sgt. Fulkersin’s birthday, so the class sang happy birthday to him.

Mrs. Mullin’s 4th period class chatted with middle school student Aaron Sloan’s father, Staff Sgt. Patrick Sloan, a medic with the National Guard in Iraq.

During 8th period, students Skyped Middle School teacher Amber Evans’ cousin, Pfc. J.T. Hurt, and two of his Army buddies stationed in Iraq.

All the three groups of soldiers were stationed at different bases in Iraq.

The soldiers answered questions about the weather, the time, what they ate, what they did on their free time, living conditions and serving their country. The soldiers also asked the students questions about school and their favorite sports teams. Of course the students told them about the undefeated Brownwood Lions.

The students thanked all the soldiers for their service to our country.  Everyone enjoyed the visits, and wished they could talk longer.

Northwest Elementary

In observance of Veterans Day, students and staff gathered in the front parking lot of the school to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag and the Texas flag and sing the Star Spangled Banner.  Jr. Vice Commander, Todd Powell, from the local VFW Post 3278, lead the school in the pledges.

Coggin Elementary & Brownwood Intermediate School

Students from Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate School attended the Brownwood Veterans Day Parade in Downtown Brownwood.  Several students made signs to thank veterans, and many carried American flags.

East Elementary

A Veterans Day ceremony was held around the flagpole at East Elementary at the beginning of the school day.  Principal, Nanda Wilbourn, explained to the students the reason we celebrate Veterans Day and recognized veterans, Mr. Jay Blackstock, computer lab assistant and Vietnam Veteran, and Army Captain John Robinson, whose sons attend East Elementary.  She also read the poem, “In Flanders Field.”  HPU Music Education Major, Talitha Cook, played “Taps” during a moment of silence.
