The Deer Project: Putting Lean Meat on the Tables of Hungry Families

deerprojectIt’s deer season once again and Good Samaritan Ministries is kicking off its third year for The Deer Project.

The Deer Project began as a way to put lean protein on the plates of the hungry in Brown County.

The project began in the 2008 hunting season and has grown each year thereafter.  The 2009-2010 hunting season brought in 6,049 pounds of meat to the freezers of Good Samaritan Ministries.  That harvest provided 24,196 meals to hungry families.

In the past, GSM has asked the hunters who were donating their deer to pay the processing fee or to call and see if money was available.  This year, through extensive fundraising efforts of GSM and its supporters, hunters need only bring their deer to a participating project and tell them they’d like to donate it to GSM’s Deer Project.

In order to make this possible, GSM relies heavily, not only on fundraising efforts, but on the donations from individuals, churches and businesses who choose to give to the program.

Misty Bowers, Public Relations Director at GSM, said, “We know not everyone chooses to or is able to hunt, but they may want to donate to a project that is putting protein on the tables of their neighbors who have come upon hard times.”

Rather than asking people to donate money to process an entire deer, GSM has simplified the process even more.  One dollar per pound of meat is all it takes!  And one pound of meat provides four servings of lean protein.

To donate to The Deer Project or for more information, call GSM at 325-643-2273.
