In the spirit of the season the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center held a Canine Costume Contest and Graduation for the PAWS Project of Texas Youth Commission on Saturday afternoon.  It was an afternoon of fun with animals and fundraising for the center, as well as a moment of achievement for the girls that had worked so hard with their dogs.

Chris Burton, who is in charge of the PAWS Project at TYC, introduced three dogs that were selected from the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center to be trained in by the girls in the program.  Each of these animals have completed along with their trainers 12 weeks of training and learned approximately 10 steps of obedience to qualify for the American Kennel Club’s Good Citizen Certification.  By being in the program the girls learn responsibility, teamwork and job training skills.  For the animals, the program helps them become more desirable for adoption.

Entrants of the contest brought not only their canines in costume but many had matching attire to achieve the full effect.

Prizes were presented for the following:

  • Best Costume:  Roxy, owners Shannon and Bailey
  • Best Dressed:  Princess, owner Danielle Cervantes
  • Best Owner Look-a-like:  Monkey, owner Jan Harry
  • Most Original:  Diego, owner Makayla Packer
  • Most Spooky & Scarey:  Tater, owner Susan Croft
  • Most Cute & Cuddly:  Kiki, owner Brittany Culverhouse
  • Brightest & Best:  Darby, owner, Mary Beth Olhausen
  • Most Spirited:  Delano, owner Tana Simpson
