Although the Howard Payne University men’s soccer team grabbed the early lead in Brownwood Saturday, the defense was not able to hold up in a 2-1 loss to the University of Texas-Tyler Patriots.
Things got going early as Cameron Jannati received a ball from Chris Thompson at the top of the box and shot a ball in the lower left portion of the goal to score. The Jackets led 1-0 just 9 minutes into the game.
Twelve minutes later in the 20th minute, UTT’s Elijah Shipman found a loose service from Daniel Kanu in the box, and poked it in past the keeper to tie everything up 1-1. UTT would break that tie with just one and half minutes left in the first half off a corner kick from Daniel Pineda that would find Jake Urbaniak in the box for the 2-1 goal.
After all the action in the first half, almost nothing developed in the second half for either team, as no more goals were scored and the Jackets would incur their second loss of conference play.
Howard Payne keeper Malcolm Framjee had four saves, while UTT GK Mark Oliphant had two.
HPU had three shots on goal, UTT had six. Fouls ended with HPU having nine and UTT 15. UTT had eight corners to HPU’s three.
The HPU men go to 4-2-1 on the season and 2-2-0 in American Southwest Conference play. UTT men are at 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the ASC.
The next two games for the Jackets are on the road Sept. 30 against UT-Dallas in Richardson, TX and Oct. 2 against the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.

It wasn’t until the 83rd minute that the Patriots, Lauren Thomas, scored a goal on a counter attack from the left side. The goal was assisted by Analiz Medina.
HPU Goal Keeper, Adrienne Walker, played a solid game, coming out of her goalie box to grab many loose balls and also recorded one save. UTT GK Morgan Dux ended the game with 3 saves.
After the first half, UTT had 7 shots to the 1 shot of HPU. Fouls were even at 4 all. HPU had 3 shots on goal for the game, UTT had 4. Fouls ended UTT-10 and HPU-8.
UTT’s Thomas picked up a yellow card in the 13th minute. Around the same time HPU’s Walker pick up a yellow as well.
The HPU women go to 2-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the American Southwest Conference. UTT goes to 5-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the ASC.
