HPU Men’s Soccer Beats Concordia, Women Tie

hpusoccerlogoAfter a slow first half for the Howard Payne men’s soccer team, three second half goals secured a 4-2 win over Concordia University Texas in their first home conference game of 2010.

Luis Tamez got the first goal for the Jackets in the 26th minute when he received a pass from Chris Thompson inside box. He then turned and finished for a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

The game would be tied by CTX when Sebastian Parra found a loose ball in the box and scored unassisted in the 53rd minute.

HPU’s Shane Cazad would break the tie with a goal in the 61st minute for the 2-1 lead. He scored again to make it 3-1 in the 78th minute. The assists on the goals were from Luis Tamez and Cameron Jannati.

HPU Freshman, Misael Carreno would get in on the scoring only thirty seconds after Cazad’s last goal off another assist from Jannati, making the score 4-1.

CTX added one last goal from Parra in the 88th minute off a assist from Drew Kasper, to make the final score of 4-2.

HPU keeper, Kyle Huesing had one save on the day. CTX keeper, Jacob Stern ended with 6 saves.

HPU ended the game with 10 shots on goal to CTX’s 3. Fouls ended HPU-15 CTX-5.

The HPU men go to 4-1-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in ASC play. CTX is 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the ASC.

The next game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 at Citizens National Bank soccer field in Brownwood against UT-Tyler.


After 110 minutes all ended in a 0-0 draw for the Howard Payne University women’s soccer team Friday afternoon against Concordia University Texas.

With about three minutes left in the second overtime, both teams had good chances to win. CTX had a goal called back because of an offside. HPU had a break away by Jordyn Stephens that was defended well near the goal to keep her from scoring.

The Lady Jackets ended the game with 10 shots on goal, while CTX ended the game with only two.

Fouls ended with HPU at 15 and CTX at 5. Corner kicks were in favor of HPU 4-3.

HPU goes to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the ASC play. CTX is at 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the ASC as well.

The next game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 at Citizens National Bank soccer field at home against UT-Tyler.
