A rapidly developing storm cell passed over Brown County Saturday night dropping heavy rain across the area.  Brownwood city workers scrambled to put out barricades on several streets where water topped the curb.  One vehicle was stalled as it attempted to enter the Vine Street underpass where more than three feet of water was standing.   No injuries were reported.   Many residential streets were completely covered by water as the storm passed through the area.

The storm put on a great show as well by not only dropping buckets of rain, but showing off continuous cloud to ground lighting.  At least two transformers in Brownwood were reported to be out and several neighborhoods lost power for a short time during the storm.  Law enforcement reported that several traffic signals were also affected as a result of power outages.

The storm also delayed Howard Payne University’s first home football game of the season by almost two hours as the rain and lighting moved out of the area.

Unofficial reports show that between 1.5” to over 2” of rain fell in and around Brownwood in just over an hour. As the rain stopped, the water began to run off returning most streets and intersections to normal.  No warnings were issued by the National Weather Service during the storm.

The forecast calls for a 30% chance of rain and storms on Sunday as a front moves through the region.
