conaway3U. S. Congressman Mike Conaway took time Friday to visit Brownwood and speak at the Republican Women’s monthly luncheon regarding the economy and America’s legacy to future generations.

Conaway talked about healthcare reform legislation and showed a flowchart titled “Your New Health Care System” prepared by the Joint Economic Committee.  Conaway said that the chart demonstrates the numerous bureaucracies the new reform creates and further complicates the healthcare system.  Conaway explained some of his concerns of healthcare reform and how he thinks the effects of the legislation should slowed and possibly repealed in the future.   To view the Healthcare Flow Chart discussed, click here.

Conaway said that the biggest issues of concern he has heard voiced in recent town hall meetings are regarding government spending and the economy.

“…Militant Islamic radicals are not going to wipe us out…it’s government spending,” stated Conaway.

He spoke of the responsibility Americans have to correct the current situation of out-of-control government spending and unaffordable programs with spending in order to be able to pass a better legacy to future generations.

“We are in danger of being the first set of generations…for handing off an America to that next set, that’s not as prosperous, that’s fully mortgaged, that doesn’t have the opportunities that you and I had as adults, that will not have the standard of living with opportunities to increase that you and I have enjoyed, it will be not as good.” (See video below for more comments).

Conaway also addressed the state of the economy and how it is not the federal government’s place to ensure that people in Brown County or anywhere else are prosperous.

“It’s not the federal government’s responsibility to prosper people everywhere,” Conaway said. “It’s the responsibility of those who live there.  The federal government should get out of the way and let you do what you do best.”

He urged individuals to use grass roots efforts to help change things saying that it is the resident’s responsibility to get to the poles and voice opinions by voting for those that will help improve the economy and the legacy to future Americans.
