The first ever Brown County Emergency Preparedness Fair was held on Saturday, September 11th and featured information booths, emergency vehicles on display, and live demonstrations from local emergency response agencies. The fair offered area residents a chance to learn more about the local emergency response capabilities and how they can better prepare and protect their own families in the event of a disaster or serious emergency.

Law Enforcement and emergency response agencies represented at the fair included the Texas State Guard, Red Cross, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the Brownwood Police and Fire Departments, Brown County Emergency Management, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas DPS, and Guardian EMS.

There was also a 9/11 memorial display set up during the event at the Depot Pavilion for those who wished to pay their respects.

Information booths were available at the Adams Street Community Center offering information on a variety of preparedness topics. Those in attendance learned how to prepare a family emergency kit, prepare pets for emergencies, and received information about how to become a member of the Brown County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the county’s volunteer emergency response organization.

Brown County Emergency Management Coordinator Brent Bush said that the fair offered the kind of information that every resident needs to know.

The Emergency Preparedness Fair was part of Brown County’s promotion for September as National Preparedness Month, an initiative sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security to encourage citizens to become better informed and prepared for emergencies.

Bush said that although attendance to the event was light, they are already thinking of ways to boost attendance next year.
