Multiple agencies responded to a brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon near Jordan Springs Cemetery at the intersection of County Road 225 and 233 which threatened several homes.

Firefighters from Brownwood, Early, Bangs, Brookesmith, and Winchell arrived on the scene around 4pm to fight the blaze that burned more than 20 acres and got as close as 25 yards from one home.  Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston said that four homes were threatened during the fire, but firefighters were able to contain it and protect all of the homes in the area.

Preston said that the fire originally started at 5:30am Sunday morning which was knocked out quickly by the Brookesmith Volunteer Fire Department.  The afternoon fire was apparently a rekindle of the morning blaze.

Preston said that the fire started near the edge of County Road 233, but the cause has yet to be determined and is under investigation.  No structures were damaged.

The public is reminded that a burn ban is in effect for Brown County as hot and dry conditions can spread flames rapidly.
