Brownwood ISD discussed the possibility of purchasing new scoreboards for their baseball and softball fields Monday night at their monthly school board meeting.

Deputy Superintendent Kevin Gabaree presented designs for two possible new scoreboards for use at Morris Southall Field and the Lady Lions Softball field near Brownwood High School.  Gabaree said that the district needs to replace the existing scoreboards, and these new scoreboards, produced by Daktronics, could become a revenue stream for the district.

“We want to try and get revenue generating source for the district,” said BISD Superintendent Reece Blincoe

If BISD purchases the scoreboards, they would sell advertising to local businesses on the signs.  The baseball scoreboard would feature three sponsor spots on the front and three on the back (which would face Good Shepherd).  The proposed softball scoreboard would feature three sponsor spots on the front.  The proposal to the school board was to purchase the scoreboards outright for a total of $65,000 and sell each sponsor spot for $1500 each with a minimum 5 year commitment.

“At $1500 per year, after 5 years the board would be paid for and begin to generate income,” said Gabaree.

Blincoe said that he thought the lifespan for scoreboards like these is usually about 10 years.

Blincoe also said that if this program of purchasing the scoreboards and selling sponsorships is successful, it would be a step closer to doing the same thing for other facilities in the future.

School board trustees expressed no objection to this project and had several positive comments.  District officials said that they would not have to seek further board approval for the project if there were not specific objections.

The proposed baseball scoreboard dimensions are 14 feet tall and 28 feet wide while the softball board would be 12 feet tall and 20 feet wide.  See renderings below.
