Brownwood High School campus is buzzing with activities, not only are the Lions back on the field with Two-a-Days football practice, but the Mighty Maroon Marching Band is also hard at work, practicing three times a day for the next two weeks.

Starting at 8am, band members begin rehearsing marching drills and then have a couple of hours of the full band playing their music for the season.  Then each section of the band has their own in depth practice in the afternoon.  The full band has a second practice again from 6-8pm each evening, with the exception of Wednesdays and weekends.

After the two weeks of intense practice, the band will have made enough progress to lighten the rehearsal times to 4-6pm each day for the last week before school starts.

“We are very excited about this year’s band – we will be fielding 105 players this year – up 20 students from past years!” stated BHS Director of Bands Richard Graham.  “Our Freshman class is the largest since I have been here with more than 40 coming in to our program.  With only 15 seniors graduating and most of the other students returning, we are looking forward to perhaps one of our best years ever.”

This year the BHS Mighty Maroon Marching Band will be competing at the San Angelo Marching Contest on October 2 and the Region Marching Contest in Brady on October 16.  Graham stated that it is also BHS’s year to advance in the band competitions to area and state levels if they qualify.

“Our Marching show is called Cirque du Soleil: Fusion” stated Graham.  “Movement 1 – The Fusion of Shape “Distorted”.  Movement 2 – The Fusion of Color “Journey of Man”.  Movement 3 – The Fusion of Sound “Incantation”.

Drum Majors for 2010-2011 are Chris Burnett and Robert Lynch.  Band Captain is Kristin Musgrove.  Color Guard Captains are Makaila Reyes and Hailey Seabourn.

During this year’s football season, be sure to remember the dedication each student put forth to make the half time shows something you can enjoy.  We appreciate the hard work and dedication that each student puts forth as the new school year approaches.
