hillSateveArea firefighters have spent the last two days fighting a brush fire that broke out Saturday in southern Brown County.  Multiple paid and volunteer firefighting agencies from numerous stations around Brown County battled the blaze which, as of Sunday afternoon, is under control according Shannon Stone of the Brownwood Fire Department.

“We did the very best job we could possibly do,” Stone said commending the hard work by firefighters.

Stone said that the fire burned between 300 and 350 acres in Brown County approximately 5 miles south of Brownwood at the southern part of the National Guard training facility.   The fire started Saturday during a shooting exercise being conducted by the National Guard.  Stone said they believe that a tracer round ignited the fire.

Firefighters worked 6-8 hours Saturday battling the fire and returned around 3am Sunday until the fire was well contained by early afternoon Sunday.

“We used a dozer to cut a parameter around the fire to help contain it,” Stone said.

Firefighters were still on scene Sunday afternoon to monitor the situation, but officials said that the worst should be over.

Brown County Commissioners have considered implementing a burn ban recently and will revisit the issue at Monday’s Commissioners Count.
