freemanfireThe Breckenridge Police Department is working with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office to catch the people responsible for vandalizing the Breckenridge High School athletic building.

Right now, investigators are lifting fingerprints and talking to informants about leads, but so far hasn’t gotten any calls on solid tips police say.

It broke my heart,” said Breckenridge ISD Director of District Services, John Richey.

Richey believes the Athletic and Fine Arts Building has brought a lot to the community.

“It’s added a piece of pride that we point to and say ‘look at what we have,'” Richey said. “It’s a state of the art facility and it’s something to be proud of.”

Over the weekend, the building was broken into, torn apart, and set on fire.  Athletic Director and head football coach Steve Freeman had priceless personal belongings in his office. The vandal stacked all of those picture frames, documents, and letters on his desk and set them on fire including one of Freeman’s photos of coaching legend Gordon Wood.

“You have a picture of the most sacred person you’ve ever witnessed and you want to model yourself after Coach Gordon Wood, and it’s in torch and flames on your desk,” Richey described. “Your sons MVP trophy of his college career is in shambles on the floor, that just breaks your heart.”

The woman coach’s office was also vandalized. The district doesn’t know why someone would attack the newly constructed building. But he vows to find out who did the damage.

“We’ve bonded with the Police and the Sheriff’s Department,” Richey said. “We are out to get you.”

Damage is estimated to be around $14,000.

Freeman joined Breckenridge ISD in January after his career at Brownwood ISD.
