juneteenthlogoThe annual Brownwood Juneteenth celebration takes place this weekend with games, talent shows, music in the park, a car show, carnival, inflatables, and much more.  The event kicks off Friday, June 18th at 11am with the Juneteenth parade which will start at the Brownwood Coliseum and roll through downtown Brownwood.

The annual Juneteenth Idol contest will also be running both Friday and Saturday with the winner’s performance taking place Saturday evening at Cecil Holman Park.

A great new addition to the Brownwood Juneteenth Celebration is the Thrills of America Carnival.  They will be set up on both days of the event at Cecil Holman Park.  Thrills of America will offer an array of games, activities, rides, and treats.   All games take 2 tokens or less per play, tokens cost $1.00 each, and all rides take 2 tickets or more.  Tickets are $1.00 each.

Soul singer Johnny Ray Kimbrough from Dallas is also scheduled to play on the 19th.  Bring your lawn chair and relax or dance awhile with music from old school & up to date.  The band starts playing at 9PM until 12:30AM and there is no charge to attend.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a weekend marked with celebrations, events, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.

The Juneteenth celebration will take place Friday & Saturday, June 18th & 19th at the Cecil Holman Park at 1100 Hall Street and the Bennie Houston Community Center at 505 Cordell.
