BACCLogoTSU_SBDCThe Tarleton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has teamed-up with the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce to offer a brand new seminar to inform small businesses on “Alternative Insurance for on the Job Injury”.

The seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, June 9 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, located at 600 E. Depot St. During this session, attendees will learn the history of the Workers Compensation system in Texas, as well as the Texas Supreme Court decision allowing employers to “opt out “of this system. Discussion will include the differences of a subscriber versus a non-subscriber for the Texas Employer Status, and the major coverage differences in the Workers Compensation system. The instructor will explain why most businesses choose to become non-subscribers and describe components of a good non-subscriber program. He will describe a comprehensive policy form and highlight points critical to business owners.

Discussion points will be taken from a Texas Occupational Shield policy and with topics such as: general overview of the policy, insuring clause, duty to defend, settlement, limits of liability and self-insured retention, exclusions, notice of claims or occurrence, conditions and definitions of terms.  Lastly, there will be discussion of an ERISA/ADR summary of a Texas Occupational Shield Plan. Topics to be discussed are: establishment of the plan, definitions and construction, eligibility and participation, benefits under the plan, operational provisions, claims, administration of the plan, adoption of the plan by an affiliated corporation and amendment and termination.

The seminar instructor will be Tommy Lloyd from Jackson Lloyd Insurance Management. The fee for the seminar is $15 for Chamber members and $59.00 for non-chamber members.  To register by phone using a credit card, please call the SBDC at (817) 573-7681, fax (817) 573-5822, or mail to Tarleton State University SBDC, 105 N.
