Brownwood Police Officer James Fuller was officially appointed Assistant Police Chief Tuesday at the Brownwood City Council meeting.

Police Chief Mike Corley selected Fuller out of 9 applicants for the job.  Corley said that it was a difficult decision between all of the qualified candidates, but Fuller was his pick.

“James rose to the top,” Corley said.  “…he did a great job as interim chief and he did a great job as acting assistant chief.”

Fuller served as Interim Police Chief from March 24th, after outgoing chief Virgil Cowin retired, until May when Corley was hired for the position.  Officer Fuller has been a member of the Brownwood Police Department since December 2000.

Before coming to the Brownwood Police Department, Fuller served in the US Army from 1990-1999 where he was a member of the Military Police and served as a Narcotic/Explosive Dog Handler.  He has received Intermediate, Advanced and Masters Peace Officer Certifications and served in Brownwood’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Corley said that with the new position comes new responsibilities for Fuller.  He will not only be an advisor to the chief, but will be the “point man” on upcoming projects such as revising office policy and researching grant money.  Fuller will also be heavily involved in building a plan to co-op with other agencies to be more aggressive towards drug related crime.

“I want, when I leave here, there to be a reputation that this isn’t where drug dealers want to be,” Corley said.
