NewspaperDressThe Brownwood High School CTE Apparel class had a tough assignment:  design an outfit using newspaper and glue.  Students were required to begin with a sketch and work from there.  The Family and Consumer Science department had no dress forms, so students made their own dress forms using an old t-shirt and duct tape.

Each group first chose a model.  The model then put on the old t-shirt, and a dress form began to take shape, as students wrapped their chosen group member with duct tape.  After several layers of duct tape, the dress form was removed from the model using scissors and carefully cutting up the center back of the dress form.  The dress form was then taped back together and stuffed with fiberfil.  Dress form openings were sealed with cardboard pieces cut to fit each opening.  A stand was made for each dress form from a closet sized dowel rod and boards.

The next step in the design process was to make the newspapers fit the dress form by using pattern drafting techniques and creativity.  Each group was given the choice of whether or not to add color to their design.  Acrylic paints were used to add the color aspect to each design as it was created and added to the dress form.

After six weeks of hard work,  some very unique designs emerged.  Those designs along with photos of the designers are pictured below.  Students pictured front left to right include:  T’Laya Bollum, Tiffanie Nava, Desteny Rodriguez, and Denise Ingram.  Middle row left to right:  Amanda Alderson, Valerie Villerreal, Brittany Hannah, Ashley Randle, Kayla Laube, and Edith Camp.  Back row left to right:  Kaysha Ridley, Deveney Mann, Christopher Morgan, Christina Galaviz, Stephanie Chapa, and Katie Mullins.
