HPUlogoKERRVILLE, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team recorded 18 hits in a 10-3 rout of Schreiner University Friday afternoon.

Howard Payne used a four run third inning to take the lead from Schreiner and was more efficient in its hitting posting a 10-3 win in the first game of both team’s season-ending series.

Schreiner jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second inning. The Yellow Jackets scored four in the very next at bat, aided by an error at the start of the inning. The score stood at 5-2 until the seventh, when HPU got three runs to put the game away. The Jackets added another two runs in the top of the ninth before Schreiner scored in the bottom of the inning for the final 10-3 margin.

Kyle Lloyd and Rey Rosales each had three hits for the Jackets and Brian Cunningham added two hits and three RBI.

Billy Ray Cruz got the complete game win giving up just three runs on 12 hits for the Jackets. Schreiner’s Garcia was charged with the loss in 5-1/3 innings of work.

Howard Payne improves to 18-20 overall and Schreiner falls to 7-30 on the year. The two schools will play a doubleheader tomorrow and are now tied for seventh place in the ASC West Division at identical 5-14 records.
