bhs_articlepicBrownwood High School in Brownwood ISD has been accepted into the National School Board Association’s 2010 Exhibition of School Architecture.

Schools were judged and accepted based on educational program features, technical information and overall photography that depicted the nature of the project.

Brownwood High School, originally constructed in 1961 and designed with an open-concept plan, was completely renovated over several years of phased construction into the “new high school.” The residents of Brownwood, Texas were passionate about restoring their high school and not building a new facility and passed a $29.4 million bond issue in 2005 to renovate all of the BISD campuses.  The renovation project was awarded to Huckabee Architects out of Fort Worth.

The renovations of the high school included enlarging all classrooms from an average of 560 ft2 to 800 ft2, adding 3,000 ft2 to the cafeteria/kitchen, complete renovation of the auditorium and replacement of all finishes throughout the facility.A new library, additional classroom space, and special program space was also added to the existing facility. The exterior aesthetics were enhanced with new materials like accent architectural masonry, field brick and energy efficient doors and windows.

The transformation of Brownwood High School not only restored a sense of school pride but also community pride. Last year, Brownwood High School became a TEA Recognized Campus and a Blue Ribbon School for the first time in the district’s history.
