Deputy Wes Copeland of the Brown County Sheriff’s department had to use lethal force on a dog that charged him last Tuesday according to the deputy’s report.

The report states that Deputy Copeland was investigating a report of a brown and white pitt bull that had broken through a screen door of a residence on County Road 609 and attempted to attack a woman’s dogs while she and her children were at home. The dog was gone by the time the officer arrived, but the victim told the deputy where she believed the owner of the dog lived.

Deputy Copeland went to the residence to attempt to make contact with the owner the report states. As Copeland exited his patrol car and approached the gate of the home, he saw a pitt bull run around his vehicle and charge him from the side according to the report.  The deputy fired one shot as the dog charged striking it in the head and killing it.

The victim later identified the dog as the same one that tried to attack her dogs.  She also said that another neighborhood woman reported that the dog attempted to attack her a few days earlier the report states.

The report also indicates that the deputy could not determine the address of the house or the identity of the owner at the time due to another aggressive dog in the yard.
