On Tuesday, the Brownwood City Council is expected to confirm City Manager Bobby Rountree’s recommendation of Richardson Police Department Assistant Chief Mike Corley to be the first hired Chief of Police for the City of Brownwood.

Corley received his badge at nineteen years of age and brings over thirty-four years of law enforcement experience to the position.  His is a third generation police officer, following in the steps of his Father and Grandfather.

A graduate of Midland High School, Corley began his career in law enforcement with the Midland Police Department in 1974.  He began work for the Richardson Police Department in 1980 as a Patrol Officer.  He has served in numerous positions including Sergeant of Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division, Patrol Lieutenant, Lieutenant Criminal Investigations Division Commander, and Special Operations Captain.  He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2002.  His responsibilities as Assistant Chief include the Operations Bureau, Patrol Operations, Investigation Operations and acts on behalf of the Chief in his absence.  Richardson, northeast of Dallas, has a population of 101,500 residents.

Brownwood officials said in a release that Corley has a record of team-building, staff development and is a proven leader.

Richardson Chief of Police, Jim Spivey, said “…the Richardson Police Department’s loss is the Brownwood Police Department’s gain.”

Corley is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police where he serves on the Investigations Committee.  He has also served on a sub-committee through IACP and Bank of America to develop a National Strategy for Identity Theft.  Corley has published town articles and Ethics article in the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin and a more recent article on Eyewitness Identification that appeared in the October 2009 issue of Police Chief Magazine.

Corley is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and Texas Command College, which is the most comprehensive program offered by the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT).  He is also a certified Master Peace Officer.  Corley is an honor graduate of Midland College, has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Corley has been married to his wife, Sheryl, for 33 years and they have two children and two grandchildren.  His hobbies include outdoor soccer and running.

He will begin is duties as Brownwood’s Police Chief on May 3, 2010.
