Basketball: Lady Jackets Fall In 2nd Round of ASC Tournament

jacketbasketball_logoPINEVILLE, LA – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets commit 16 second half turnovers falling to Louisiana College 68-55 in the second round of the 2010 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. Howard Payne waits till Monday morning to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA III National Tournament. 

After leading by 14 points midway through the second half, Howard Payne committed 16 second half turnovers and only managed 29.6% the rest of the way. Making a 14-0 run to tie the game at 52-52, LC continued their late run and extended their lead to 9, 55-64 with 1:30 to play. Howard Payne was unable to bounce back and fell to Louisiana College 68-55. 

Weathering Louisiana College’s 7-0 start to the game, the Lady Jackets battled back to take the lead. An Elaine Hobbs three pointer with 4:05 on the first half clock brought the HPU lead to 27-19. Howard Payne held a 36-27 halftime advantage led by Hobbs’ 14 first half points. 
Howard Payne extended their lead to as much as 14, 52-38 on a Brittany Zamora three-pointer with 10 minutes to play. Louisiana College when on a 14-0 run to tie the game at 52-52 with 7:22 left in the game. The Lady Jackets only scored three more points the rest of the game. 

Elaine Hobbs tied her career high with 20 points with 9 rebounds. Zamora finished with 16 points. LC was led by Tillisha Givens with a game high 26 followed by Christy Pantallion with 18. Briana Lewis added 11. 

HPU could receive an at-large bid to the NCAA III National Tournament, Howard Payne stands at 21-6 overall. LC improves to 23-2 on the year and will play McMurry University in the championship game on Sunday.
