jacketbasketball_logoThe Howard Payne Lady Jackets prove to be too much for Concordia University Texas, winning 73-55 over the Tornados Thursday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.

Brittany Zamora and Roshonda Gayden both scored 18 points and combine to score half of the points for the Lady Jackets.

The Lady Jackets took an 11 point lead at the half, 18-29. HPU maintain that lead and eventually took a 17 point lead with 4:51 to play. The Lady Jackets rolled to the 73-55 win.

After Gayden’s and Zamora’s 18 points, was Jasmine Thomas with eight points, five rebounds, and three assists. Elaine Hobbs added eight points, three rebounds, and two steals.

Kerrie Carter led Concordia with 20 points and nine rebounds. Whitney Holdbrook followed with 11.

After dismal 37 percent shooting in the first half, the Lady Jackets shot 16-28 in the second for 57 percent. Concordia shot only 36 percent for the game from the floor, and were 7-19 from the arc for 37 percent.

Howard Payne had 18 turnovers to Concordia’s 22. HPU outrebounded CTX 42-34.

The Jackets move to 19-5 on the year and 15-5 in the ASC. Concordia drops to 8-16 overall and 6-14 in the ASC.

Their final game of the regular season for the Lady Jackets is at 1:00 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Brownwood Coliseum against Univ. of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Howard Payne has secured the second spot in the ASC West Division and will be playing in the opening round of the ASC Championship Tournament at 5:00 pm February 26th in Pineville, LA.
