jacketbasketball_logoIn a battle between leaders in the American Southwest Conference West Division, career highs from Brittany Zamora and Elaine Hobbs help fuel a Howard Payne University comeback win on Saturday over the Texas Lutheran University Lady Bulldogs, 89-80.

TLU came out hot and stretched their three point halftime lead to nine, 49-40. The Lady Jacket comeback was sparked by three Katy Sarem three pointers to tie the game 59-59 at the nine minute mark.

From that point on, HPU went on a 16-7 run to grab back the lead and gain their own nine point advantage, 75-66. The Lady Jackets stretched their lead out to 11 and went on to win 89-80.
HPU was 27-54 from the floor, 9-18 from the arc, both for 50 percent. They also were 26 of 32 from the free-throw line for 81 percent. The Lady Bulldogs were 28 of 64 from the floor for 44 percent, including 10 of 24 from three for 42 percent.

Brittany Zamora led HPU with a game high 22 points, five assists, and six steals. Elaine Hobbs added a career high 20 points along with 8 rebounds. Hope Hohertz got 17 points and eight rebounds; Katy Sarem also contributed 15 to the scoring.

TLU’s top scorer was Kimberly Hagan with 17 points. Candace Mitchell and Pearl Kafoa added 11 and 12 respectively. Tamisha Timpson scored nine and led her team with seven rebounds.

HPU women go to 15-4 overall on the season and 11-4 in the ASC. The TLU women fall to 10-8 overall and 9-6 in the ASC.

Howard Payne’s next game is Feb. 4 in Kerrville, Texas against Schreiner University at 5:30 pm.
